The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

The glint of afternoon sun off the lab’s stainless steel always did something to my concentration. It’s an unsettling reminder of the outside world – a world constantly bombarded with conflicting skincare advice, a world I attempt, on occasion, to bring some clarity. Today, however, it’s simpler. We’re dissecting The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5.
For the uninitiated, hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant champion, capable of pulling moisture from the air and delivering it to the skin. Its molecular weight is key. This particular serum boasts multiple molecular weights, which is clever. Why? Because it means it can penetrate different layers of the epidermis, offering both immediate surface hydration and deeper, long-term benefits. The B5, aka panthenol, then steps in to enhance the hydration and contribute to some minor barrier repair. So, a solid foundation.
My initial impression: a clear, slightly viscous fluid, utterly fragrance-free, as promised. Good. Fragrance, frankly, is often an unnecessary irritant. Many patients I see are struggling with a compromised skin barrier. The lack of scent helps ensure you are not making that barrier more fragile. Applying it is also straightforward. Two or three drops are ample – enough to cover the face and neck. It feels immediately hydrating; a light, pleasing tingle hints at the absorption in action.
I’ve often found myself recommending HA serums, but The Ordinary’s stands out for its remarkable accessibility. The price point is stunningly low, which is a tremendous asset in a market dominated by inflated marketing and complex ingredient lists. It cuts through the noise. It’s a breath of fresh air. Consider this compared to, say, a more expensive serum which includes similar levels of HA and has added peptides, which are generally intended for anti-aging benefits. You’re spending more on the bells and whistles. Do those peptides actually make a difference? Perhaps, but it’s a question you can skip if you’re on a budget, and stick with the fundamentals.
Now, a small caveat: the texture can be a tad sticky if you apply too much. But, a simple trick is to layer it under your moisturizer while your skin is still damp to trap that hydration. Problem solved.
So, who is this serum truly for? If you’re battling dryness, if you have sensitive skin, or if you’re simply starting your skincare journey and want a no-nonsense hydrator, this is your starting point. It’s that clear. Buy it. You won’t regret it.
